SiIvaGunner Wiki:Meme discussion

What does or does not qualify as a meme within the SiIvaGunner Wiki has been a point of contention for years. To rectify this, we have created meme-discussion and meme-proposal channels on the SiIvaGunner Wiki: Discord server.

Background

During the October 1, 2022 Moot, it was decided that "single-source" channel memes should have at least 30 uses to warrant a page and category, along with other criteria. During the August 5, 2023 Moot, this number was lowered even further to 25.

This lead to the creation of dozens of meme categories with minimal to no discussion, often based within sources that had little to write about within relation to SiIvaGunner.

On May 25, 2024, it was proposed and approved to pause the creation of memes in general, unless proposed within a Moot. This way editors could both have time to think of proper overall criteria, and encourage group consensus on proposed subjects. This worked partially as intended, slowing meme creation down significantly, but not keeping up with

Before and during the pause, "THE HOPEFULLY FINAL MEME DISCUSSION THREAD" (a thread created in wiki-general) was created in an attempt to establish what factors encompass a meme on SiIvaGunner. Discussion was had, two ideas were pinned, but they sit dormant and unproposed to this day. The overall discussion of establishing criteria wasn't going anywhere.

Due to neither of these systems fully working, we implemented a mixture of both on the 25th of November, 2024: the "meme-discussion" channel.

After later voting during the January 20, 2025 Moot, we changed the area of voting from Threads to the Forum channel "meme-proposals".

The meme-discussion channel currently serves the purpose of freely identifying and analyzing sources used within SiIvaGunner, and determining whether they warrant a meme article and / or category on the SiIvaGunner Wiki; be they past, present, developing, forgotten, or misorganized. Casual discussion, spitballing, and establishment of overall "what is a meme???" criteria in relevance to the concept will be had in the chat itself; with the central intent of continuing off of the pinned proposals mentioned earlier.

Previously, it also served the purpose of the meme-proposal channel, discussed below.

meme-proposals

The meme-proposals channel is a forum channel dedicated to the approval of these sources for documentation, restructuring, or deletion on the SiIvaGunner Wiki.

In order to promote commitment and active discussion, voting in this channel will be restricted to those who are verified on the Discord server. A note from the #roles channel:

Verification signifies that a user has a wiki account, but is not required. Users can request verification by pinging Spottygamester or Ironwestie, telling them their wiki username, and then posting their Discord tag on their wiki profile. Afterward, you will be given the "verified members" role.

This is a degree higher than spitballing within meme-discussion: determining officially if a source is a meme within the community will require a Proposal. Proposals will operate similar to moots, in which one must prepare, propose, and discuss why a subject should, or should not be called a "meme" on the wiki. Users will vote on them, and this will determine whether they are documented. In this format, forum posts can be created by users to officially decide if specific sources are memes.

Although this is inspired by the moot's format, it differs in several aspects:

Vote Approvers

Vote Approvers are sub-roles halfway between the responsibilities of a Verified member and Moderator, they facilitate the processes of making sure Proposals are running correctly. This topic was brought up during the original proposal for a Meme Discussion Channel, as to not overwork the few active mods with managing however many Proposals are created in the coming days. These users have the responsibility of:

Closing threads after a week
Extending threads, if requested
Manually reading over and determining if threads came to a natural agreement
Summarizing chat discussions onto the Archive page
Warning proposers if any rules (listed below) are accidentally ignored
Locking proposal threads if the rules are intentionally ignored

If one wishes to volunteer for this role, they must be:

Verified within the Discord server
Deemed a trusted member of the community, at the mods' discretion
Capable of impartially summarizing forum discussions

After the potential volunteer has met all of these criteria, they may request the role in the ⁠help channel by pinging a moderator and linking the subpage. This role will be given out by mods to trusted members, and expand in size as time goes on. Be wary that if the mods deem it necessary because of user misconduct, this role may be removed as well.

The Proposal Process

Prior, it is highly recommended (but not required) to ask if anyone else is planning to propose a source (aka "calling dibs"), so that nobody wastes time planning for a subject.

First: The proposer creates a forum post, titling with clear intent over what the discussion will be (i.e. "Mario is a meme", "Mario is not a meme", or "Mario is not a meme, Ground Theme is").
- The proposer should restate this point in the first message in the thread, and clearly explain their points within.
- This may be in the form of an essay, a bulleted list of criteria, or any other easily legible format. It should also be at least 3 sentences long.
- Other than this, while detail is encouraged, it is left to their discretion.
Second: The thread will stay open for one week, to allow discussion of the source to be available on anyone's schedule. A Vote Approver should close this thread as soon as the week is over.
- If there are not yet 7 responses, the proposer may ping a Vote Approver to request an extra three days.
Third: Both voting and discussion are open.
Fourth: a source passes and is considered a meme if there are at least 75% positive votes, and there are at least 7 people voting (the bare minimum for example, at least 6 out of 7 (0.85%) of people must agree for the source to pass).
- General discussion on the specific subject should occur in the thread.
- Votes can be cast at any time, including the initial creator of the thread.
- As usual, means you agree, means you disagree.
"Restructure" () votes will count toward restructuring the source (i.e., In the context of " We should make Rips featuring Help Me! (Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain)", one could respond " "Help Me" is not a meme, it is part of the central idea of Gegagedigedagedago").
- If you are truly indifferent to the source being documented, then don't vote.
- Some older logs use "neutral" instead. The restructure emote was introduced on January 29, 2025.
Each vote should be accompanied by a sentence of agreement or disagreement with the proposer's points ("I agree, this song was used very often in June 2024"),
If your opinion differs mid-discussion, do not delete your previous vote message, the entire discussion should be archived. Just cross it out and write a new one. Crossed out votes will not be counted.
Fifth: After a week has passed, "Vote Approvers" will:
Approve that these discussions were effective after the week is up
- Less than 7 votes, the proposal is rejected.
- More than 75% positive votes, the proposal is approved.

Less than 75% positive votes, the proposal is rejected. This counts for restructure votes as well (unless all restructure voters agree on the same way to split it, in which we would go through with that option) Feel free to bring up this restructuring again in your own thread in the future. If the discussion and / or vote involved foul play, there is no need to log it. At this point, the meme article and / or category can be created by anyone. Congratulations! We've documented a meme.

Conclusion

Proper discussion and decision between multiple editors should cause the least issues going forward.

I know there are a bunch of rules to this that may seem boring and complicated, but the purpose is mainly to establish a system of communal trust, to have sub-discussions on our own. You think the source is (or isn't) worthy? Sit down and put a few minutes into thinking about it. We are trying to document art, after all.
