SiIvaGunner Wiki:Categories
File:Wiki.png | Notice
This page is an official SiIvaGunner Wiki guideline. It is a accepted standard by the community that should be followed with common sense by editors. Substantive edits should be discussed with the community in the page's talk page or as a new proposal. |
This page describes how categories are used on the SiIvaGunner Wiki.
Category pages
On this wiki, if a page is categorized into a nonexistent category, the category's page will still not actually exist (editors will see a "Create" button and not an "Edit" button when navigating to it), but links to it will be blue. All categories that are in use are listed by Special:Categories, and nonexistent categories that are in use are listed by Special:WantedCategories.
Usually, the use of nonexistent categories should be avoided. However, just because a category is already in use does not necessarily mean its page should be created; an alternative resolution is to remove pages from the category so that it is no longer in use. If you are unsure about whether or not a category should exist, discuss it in a thread or in this wiki's Discord server.
Creating new categories
Each category should contain at least one page; empty categories should usually be deleted (playlists which do not contain any public SiIvaGunner videos may have empty categories).
Unlike other pages, consensus should usually be obtained before creating new category pages, since categories inherently affect multiple pages. (This also applies to creating pages for nonexistent categories that are already in use.) Some common types of categories may be created without consensus; those types are as follows:
- Subcategories of Playlists, Rips by event, Rips by author, Rips by album and Rips by month: Playlists, channel events, contributors, albums and months are automatically eligible for categories that contain articles for rips and album tracks.
- Subcategories of Frequently ripped tracks: Tracks that have been ripped ten[1] or more times on the channel are automatically eligible for categories that contain articles for their rips. Rips of remasters, arrangements, covers and other alternate versions are usually grouped with rips of the original track for categorization purposes.
All other category pages should be discussed in a thread or in this wiki's Discord server before being created. This includes subcategories of Rips featuring... and categories which do not contain articles for rips or album tracks.
When created, category pages should contain a brief description of the category contents, and should be categorized into at least one parent category. Subcategories of Rips featuring..., Rips by author, and Frequently ripped tracks may contain a sorted list of the category contents. Subcategories of Playlists should contain Template:Game and a list of the playlist's contents; further information on the subject of the playlist and/or the playlist itself is ideal but not necessary for creation. A style guide for the contents of category pages can be found at SiIvaGunner Wiki:Manual of Style#Categories.
Categorizing pages
Every page on this wiki (except for talk pages, redirects, and user pages) should belong in at least one category.
Some templates, such as Template:Rip, automatically categorize articles. Templates should not have auto-categorization added without consensus; for small sets of articles, adding each page to the category normally should suffice.
Pages should always be categorized into the most specific categories possible, but they may also be categorized into less specific parent categories for organizational purposes. On this wiki, pages should not be categorized into categories about themselves; e.g. the article Rip should not be in the category Rips.
Sort keys
Some categories on this wiki use sort keys, which change the sort order of the list displayed on the category page. For example:
- Subcategories of Frequently ripped tracks should use each rip's mix name as the sort key. If the rip does not have a mix name, use a space; e.g.
[[Category:Slider| ]]
. - Subcategories of Rips by month should use the year and month in the format
YYYY-MM
as the sort key; e.g.[[Category:January 2016 rips|2016-01]]
.
Maintenance categories
Maintenance categories are used solely for the maintenance of the wiki and are not intended to be used by readers. They can be empty some or most of the time, and creating new ones does not require consensus. Special:TrackingCategories lists system-defined tracking categories, and the category Site maintenance contains other maintenance categories.
