"Hot Cross Buns" is a nursery rhyme and meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
Overview
"Hot Cross Buns" originated as an English street cry, presumably used by merchants selling the spiced English confection of the same name. The song was later perpetuated as a nursery rhyme.
In the United States, it is typical for public elementary schools to teach students how to play "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder,[1] which is the song's most recognized role in modern culture. In music education, "Hot Cross Buns" uses a series of descending notes (mi-re-do) for the lyric "hot cross buns", making the start sound extremely similar to another nursery rhyme, "Three Blind Mice", which "Hot Cross Buns" is often confused with. This version is extremely easy to play on any instrument due to it only using three unique notes. The more traditional version of "Hot Cross Buns" descends then ascends instead (do-so-do), but is usually not used since it's harder to play.
Rips
"Hot Cross Buns" was first referenced by SiIvaGunner in the rip "Sexy and I Know It - DJ Hero 2", though only visually with the video "Spiderman Hot Cross Buns Rhymes For Children | Spiderman Cartoon Nursery Rhymes For Babies" by Spiderman Rhymes. Its next appearance wouldn't be until over 3 years later, with the rip "Usada Pekora BGM (Extended Version) - Hololive x Azur Lane Collab Event", which features the melody of "Hot Cross Buns".
It would become a recurring joke on the channel starting with the September 13, 2023 rip "Bergentrückung (Sigma NTSC Edition) - Undertale", which is a simple melody change rip. Following this rip, more simple "Hot Cross Buns" rips would be uploaded every other day until September 21, alternating between a single "Hot Cross Buns" rip and three "Hot Cross Buns" rips in a row. Most of these rips had novel mix names that are seldom used or have never been used before, examples being "Gato's Song (NA Mix) - Chrono Trigger", "Open Sesame Tofu! (Fan Translation) - MOTHER 3", and "Smart Race (Rumored Chapter 3 Version) - Deltarune". The novel mix names (and the simple melody change rips they were used on) would both became less common after the initial September 13-21, 2023 wave of rips.
After this wave of rips cemented "Hot Cross Buns" as a SiIvaGunner meme, certain rips have needed to use "Hot Cross Buns" without its melody (such as in mashup medley rips). In these cases, the video "Hot Cross Buns | Nursery Rhymes | Super Simple Songs" by Super Simple Songs is almost always used.
The initial wave of rips would also receive a lore explanation in "Tutorial - Fisher-Price Perfect Fit". It is revealed in this rip that the "Fisher-Price Hacker", a character from Heboyi's chipspace set in "Main Theme - SiIvaGunner II: Rip of Samus" and "Main Theme - SiIvaGunner 2: Rip of Samus 2: Totino's Mania Live!", used a program called "HCB.exe" to hack channel and upload the first few "Hot Cross Buns" rips.
