"Gangnam Style" is a song made by the K-pop singer PSY. It is a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel, being the fourth-most recurring joke behind The Nutshack, "Snow halation" and "Meet the Flintstones".

Overview

On July 15, 2012, Korean pop artist PSY released "Gangnam Style" on his album PSY 6 (Six Rules), Part 1. The music video for the song was uploaded onto YouTube the same day. In the same year, "Gangnam Style" would become the most viewed YouTube video, which was a title that was previously held by the music video for Justin Bieber's "Baby". "Gangnam Style" was the first video to reach one billion views on YouTube. "Gangnam Style" continued to stay as the most viewed video on YouTube up until mid-2017, and it now currently sits at 5.5 billion views and 30 million likes as of May 2025.

After the music video for "Gangnam Style" was released, it became a massive viral hit, with the song, dances, and PSY himself becoming pop culture icons. The song and dance would be referenced in various commercials, TV shows and films. "Gangnam Style" would appear in video games such as Just Dance 4. "Gangnam Style" would also inspire multiple parodies to be made of it. PSY has also made numerous appearances at major events and in other media after the song's success.

Nearly ten years after "Gangnam Style" and the album were published, PSY would bring back the character with his iconic dance in the music video "That That", which is part of his album PSY 9th uploaded on April 29, 2022.

The song would also become a meme and become a notable source of mashups on Triple-Q's channel. He would release collaborative albums on his Bandcamp page based around "Gangnam Style" and other songs by PSY called GANGNAMCORE. It is worth noting that several SiIvaGunner rippers (including key figures Chaze the Chat and MtH) contributed to the GANGNAMCORE series, even before the channel's formation.

Rips

"Gangnam Style" is one of the most frequently referenced jokes on the channel and has a very extensive history on the channel. It first appeared on the channel in "Battle! (Wild Pokémon) - Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire", where an "op" sound effect from the song plays at the end. The song made a ton of appearance throughout Season 1.

The song has continued to make various appearances every year since then, though to a slightly lesser degree. A majority of the rips that feature the song are mashups with pitch-shfiting.

Every year, typically on July 15th, the anniversary of the release of "Gangnam Style", an annual PSY Day channel event occurs. All of these events frequently feature "Gangnam Style" and many later ones started to feature other PSY songs. The 7th PSY day event included the release of SGFR Presents: PSY 9th Arrangements, an album featuring remixes and arrangements of various PSY songs including "Gangnam Style".

The song has been directed ripped under Just Dance 2015, Steve Harvey, Neon FM, and Gangnam Dance School. Various different covers and remixes of the song have appeared in many rips, with the main one being "Mitt Romney Style" by CollegeHumor.
