Friday Night Funkin' is a video game developed by Cameron Taylor (a.k.a. ninjamuffin99), Isaac Garcia (a.k.a. Kawai Sprite), David Brown (a.k.a. PhantomArcade), and evilsk8r. It is also a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
Overview
Friday Night Funkin' is a browser-based open-source rhythm game that shares some gameplay mechanics with other rhythm games, mainly PaRappa the Rapper and other "four-key" rhythm games such as DanceDanceRevolution. The game's story revolves around Boyfriend, a young singer and college dropout who must defeat various opponents in rap battles in order to date his beloved Girlfriend and prove himself to her parents. The game features a wide cast of characters, many of whom are from other Newgrounds properties, such as Skid and Pump from Sr Pelo's web-show Spooky Month, Pico from Pico's School, and the website's mascot Tankman.
Ever since its initial release as a submission for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam, the game has received massive popularity, inspiring the developers to expand it and eventually release it as a full game. The game's soundtrack, largely composed by Kawai Sprite, has also been widely acclaimed. Due to the game being released as open-source, it also has a large modding community, with many of the game's mods achieving success comparable to the game itself, such as V.S. Whitty Full Week and Madness: Friday Night Funkin' (Tricky Mod).
Rips
Since the start of 2021, several Friday nights have seen the release of three Friday Night Funkin' rips in a row, with the first rip uploaded at 6:00 PM, the second uploaded at 8, and the third at 10. This is done in reference to the name of the game and the way its levels are set up with three songs being part of a "week". At first, almost all rips of the game were part of this upload scheme and almost all Fridays had this upload scheme, but it would gradually stop being used throughout 2021. Though individual uploads have been more common since 2022, most rips of Friday Night Funkin' are still uploaded on Fridays. Starting on June 4, rips of mods of the game have also been published, albeit less frequently than rips of the base game, and a separate playlist was created for them.
Notably, every Friday Night Funkin' rip features footage of the game with modified visuals and/or charting to go along with the rip's joke. Rips of level themes always end with the game over sequence being suddenly triggered; considering how the game over sequence shows Boyfriend with blue balls, this is likely done as a reference to the channel's blue balls meme. In addition, all rips of the game, excluding the first three and later three other rips, have the playlist link in their video descriptions replaced with a download link to the mod used in the rip.
As the game has been extremely popular and trendy, these trends/rules may be an attempt by the SiIvaGunner team to limit how many submissions of the game there are, similar to how Undertale duplicate rips were banned in 2016 when the game was off the heels of its peak popularity. Also as a result of the game's popularity, rips featuring references to the game and its soundtrack have been plentiful. Most of the rips featuring the game or its mods incorporate their soundtracks with melody changes, or with the vocals of the characters being pitch-shifted to the track's melody. Mashups using the soundtracks are also uploaded, though less frequently.

Trivia
- Since February 19, 2021 or earlier, the top 10 most-viewed rips of Season 5 have all been rips of this game.
- On March 14, 2021, all 25 rips of Friday Night Funkin' that had been published at the time made up the top 25 most-viewed rips of Season 5.
- Many Friday Night Funkin' rips have been acknowledged by the game's creators, mainly Kawai Sprite and ninjamuffin99, through comments on the rips, which are usually hearted and/or pinned by SiIvaGunner.
- MtH, lead manager of the SiIvaGunner channel, is part of the Friday Night Funkin' team, and specifically helped with touching up most of the game's charts and charting most of Week 7.[1]
- In the "specialthanks.txt" file located in the game's data folder, "SiIvaGunner" is included among the people credited in it.
- During the "Community" section of the Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game Kickstarter trailer, several SiIvaGunner rips (namely "Fresh", "Bopeebo (In-Game Version)", "South", and "Blammed") are briefly shown.
- On the Newgrounds YouTube channel's upload of said trailer, a comment was left by the SiIvaGunner channel, saying "This is quality."[2]
- Prior to the creation of Friday Night Funkin', evilsk8r provided the Parappa artwork used in the SiIvaGunner Art Fusion Collab.
